Dorothy in Wonderland
First Show
Dorothy in Wonderland
Town Hall Theater/Washington Township
I
was so excited to get the job of a scenic painting artist (or charge artist) with the Town
Hall Theater in Washington Township. The Town Hall Theater is a children's theater in the middle of uptown Centerville, Ohio.
According to Wikipedia: A charge artist (or charge scenic artist and also head scenic artist) leads and oversees the painting of the stage.
I had done a little bit of scenic
painting and design many years ago when my daughter was in high school,
but nothing since then.
My daughter Lydia and I on the set for Auntie Mame at Westerville North.
My
daughter actually went on to major in back stage. I did audit a class
at Otterbein University in Set Design but that's as far as my theater
experience went after my brief stint with Westerville North in 2007.
Until now....I was excited, but yet apprehensive, to be hired as the
scenic painter for The Town Hall Theater in Centerville/Washington
Township.
I
started work with a disadvantage: a painful frozen shoulder from a
rotator cuff tear! Fortunately I was able to get a cortisone shot about a
week into my job and things got better from there. I found that my job
actually made it better because it forced me to move it!
This
was my first show. It was a big learning curve! I learned so much
during my first show everything from what type of paint and brushes to buy to how to create certain scenic painting techniques! I'm certain that the learning will continue every
time I do a show! I was hired to translate designs that designers had
created into set pieces. I was to paint them as close to the set designs as I
could. At first I worried about getting the painting exactly the same as the
design. Soon I would learn how to put my own flair on the
designs.
The
pictures below show the progression of my set painting from beginning to end. I was really thrilled with
how it came out!
After
this show I was excited to move onto the next show. I was able to clean out an
old shop for my painting shop. Couldn't wait to get
started on the next show

These are the designs that I started with for this show
The Beginning!
First thing I painted was these flats. They started out just black and I did the designs on them.
Next painting effort!
It was a challenge figuring out the technique for these boxes and rocks. But they came out pretty good!
