Jr Claus

 Jr Claus Dec. 2-18, 2022

I was told that there wouldn't be too much work with this play, because they had done it before. They said that set was already finished. I found out later that much of it was sold after the last time the play was performed! They said that there was a fireplace, a sleigh and some touch ups to paint. They already has the main background and the blue trees. Shouldn't take long....

The fireplace turned out to be huge and had a front, back and sides that were all different. One side had brick, one stone, one had green paint and there was also blue highlighted snow too!

The sleigh was fairly straight forward and it was great that it could be painted flat. But the designs on the boxes and the candy stripes were a lot of work. Luckily I had some help doing the stamps on the boxes. But the candy striping was a real bear! I don't think that I'll ever be able to look at a candy cane again without thinking about painting the legs of the tables! It would take one whole day!

I also had to touch up the previous set pieces. Which were the walls and the blue trees. This was quite a challenge, because we didn't have any of the previous color left. I had to match it! The green on the back wall was hard to match, but the blue trees were easy, because I just added more snow to them.

The set came out really nice. I hate to think how long it would have taken me to do it if I had to paint all of the set, because just the pieces that I did paint took me long enough!

Here is the set with my candy striped tables!

The Fireplace

Below is the design specs for the fireplace.

Below are the various steps that it took to paint all sides of the fireplace.

The Sleigh

Here is a picture of the sleigh that they were making. It was rented for the last show, but they decided to recreate it for this show. So I was to choose the colors. I decided to replace the gold with gray, which would be then painted over with silver.

It made it easier because I could work on the sleigh while it was apart.

The Old Set Pieces

I had to match the color so I could touch up the paint. Took me several tries but I finally did it! The blue trees were easy to touch up because I just painted snow over the problem areas

The Blocks

I had help doing the stamps. I did the lines.

Came out pretty good!

The Sign Post

I bought an acrylic pen to do these signs with. They came out nice. I also striped the pole too.

The Candy Striping

I don't think I will ever look at candy cane the same way again! It looks so easy, but it isn't. It really drove me crazy!

The ones below are for the stage railings. There was one railing that already had stripes on it, so I just copied the stripes onto the other poles from that one. Worked great! We dipped the tops in the red paint to get them a nice solid red.

The Candy Striped Table Legs

I thought that I could get by with just painting the legs red and white. But they wanted them candy striped....so much work....but I did it!

I made the red and white first and then taped the stripes and painted them.

This candy striping took me one whole day! So much work!

The tables came out great! Worth the effort!

The Finished Product

Here's the whole set. It looked great!
